Tyche was more than a bringer of personal good luck: she could represent the destiny and changing fortunes of an entire city. In the Hellenistic period, political upheaval and military instability made her an especially powerful symbol of life’s unpredictable reversals.

Her parentage varies among ancient and later traditions. She is often described as a daughter of the Titans Oceanus and Tethys, making her one of the Oceanids, but other accounts give her different divine parents. She was also sometimes connected with Plutus, the god of wealth.

Artists commonly showed Tyche wearing a mural crown, identifying her with a city, and carrying a cornucopia, rudder, or wheel. Her Roman counterpart was Fortuna, though the two traditions are not identical in every detail.
