Who is the Greek god of the wild, shepherds, and rustic music?

The story behind the answer

The Greek god of the wild, shepherds, and rustic music is Pan.

Pan was an Arcadian deity associated with the wild countryside, flocks, shepherds, mountain valleys, forests, fertility, and rustic music. Greek artists commonly depicted him with the legs, hindquarters, horns, and ears of a goat, reflecting his close connection with untamed nature. Unlike the major Olympians, he was especially worshipped in natural places such as caves and groves rather than grand urban temples.

Pan is famous for the pan flute, also called the syrinx. In one myth, the nymph Syrinx fled from him and was transformed into reeds; Pan cut the reeds into different lengths and joined them into an instrument. He also challenged Apollo to a musical contest, but Apollo's lyre was judged superior. The story helped contrast polished civic art with Pan's spontaneous rural music.

His sudden appearances were believed to cause irrational fear in lonely places, giving rise to the word “panic.” Pan was later identified or closely associated with Roman nature gods such as Faunus and influenced later images of satyrs, fauns, and the modern “horned” nature spirit.
