Who is the Greek god of the forge and fire?

The story behind the answer

Who is the Greek god of the forge and fire? Hephaestus is the Greek god of the forge and fire.

Hephaestus also ruled over metalworking, metallurgy, craftsmanship, sculpture, and volcanoes. In myth, he was the divine blacksmith who made weapons, armor, jewelry, and magical objects for the gods. His workshop was imagined on Mount Olympus or beneath volcanic islands such as Lemnos and Sicily.

Greek myths give differing accounts of his parentage and exile from Olympus. He is sometimes described as the son of Zeus and Hera, and elsewhere as Hera’s child alone. Stories also emphasize his lameness and his skill: physical imperfection did not prevent him from becoming one of the most useful and inventive Olympians. His symbols are the hammer, anvil, and tongs.

Hephaestus is commonly confused with Ares because both are associated with violence and warfare. However, Ares represents the fury of battle, while Hephaestus creates the weapons and armor. The Romans identified him with Vulcan, whose name survives in the word “volcanic.”
