Ame-no-Uzume is the goddess of dawn and laughter who danced to lure Amaterasu from the cave.
In the central episode of the myth, the sun goddess Amaterasu hides inside Amano-Iwato, the Heavenly Rock Cave, after a conflict with her brother Susanoo. Her withdrawal plunges the world into darkness, and the other deities struggle to bring back the sunlight.
Ame-no-Uzume overturns a tub outside the cave and performs a comic, exuberant dance. The assembled gods laugh loudly, creating a commotion that makes Amaterasu curious. When Amaterasu peeks outside, the gods use a mirror and jewel to draw her farther out, while Ame-no-Tajikarawo prevents her from returning inside.
The story links Ame-no-Uzume with dawn, mirth, dance, theatrical performance, and ritual communication. It is also traditionally connected with the origin of kagura, a major form of Japanese sacred dance. Benzaiten is associated with music and eloquence, but she is not the dancer who restores sunlight in the cave story.
