Who is the god of the underworld?

The story behind the answer

Who is the god of the underworld? Hades is the god and king of the underworld in Greek mythology.

Hades was a son of the Titans Cronus and Rhea and brother of Zeus, Poseidon, Hera, Demeter, and Hestia. After the younger gods defeated the Titans, the three brothers divided the cosmos: Zeus received the sky, Poseidon the sea, and Hades the underworld.

Hades ruled the dead rather than acting as a personification of death itself. That role belonged more directly to Thanatos. His realm was guarded by Cerberus, the three-headed dog, and Hades was often shown with a bident or a key. He was also associated with underground riches and sometimes called Plouton, meaning “the wealthy one.”

A common mix-up is treating Hades as a Greek equivalent of Satan. Ancient Greek stories generally portray him as stern and impartial, not as the embodiment of evil. His wife and queen was Persephone, whose seasonal myth links the underworld with the cycle of nature.
