Who is the god of chaos and disorder in Egyptian mythology?

The story behind the answer

Who is the god of chaos and disorder in Egyptian mythology? Set is the canonical answer.

Set, also called Seth, was an ancient Egyptian god associated with chaos, storms, deserts, violence, and warfare. He was usually portrayed with a mysterious animal head whose exact species remains uncertain. Unlike a simple embodiment of evil, Set was a complex deity whose destructive power could also defend the ordered world.

Set is most famous for murdering his brother Osiris and contending with Osiris’s son, Horus. In the myth, Set’s struggle with Horus reflects the conflict between disorder and legitimate kingship. Horus eventually becomes king, while Set remains a dangerous but necessary power at the margins of creation.

Later Egyptian traditions increasingly treated Set as hostile, especially as political and foreign associations changed. However, he could also protect the solar barque by fighting Apep, the serpent that threatened the sun’s nightly journey. Apep is therefore another plausible chaos-related figure, but it is a serpent-demon rather than the standard answer to the question asking for the god of chaos and disorder. Osiris represents regeneration and the afterlife, while Horus represents kingship and the sky.
