Who is the first female playable protagonist in the main Pokémon games?

The story behind the answer

Kris is the first female playable protagonist in the main Pokémon games.

She appears in Pokémon Crystal, the enhanced version of Pokémon Gold and Silver released for the Game Boy Color. Pokémon Crystal was the first main-series title to let players choose a female player character as well as a male one.

Kris’s Japanese name is Crystal, and she is sometimes called Crystal in English fan discussions. She travels through the Johto region, receives a starter Pokémon from Professor Elm, and can ultimately challenge the Pokémon League.

Kris is often confused with May, the female protagonist introduced in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, or with Dawn from Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. Those characters came later. The Pokémon anime also includes several prominent female trainers, but its characters are not the same as the selectable protagonists in the games.
