Who is the creator of Downton Abbey?

Julian Fellowes is the creator of Downton Abbey. He conceived the series as a sweeping historical drama about the aristocratic Crawley family, their country estate, and the household servants whose lives were closely connected to theirs.

Fellowes also served as the programme’s principal writer, shaping its interlocking family, class, romance, and inheritance storylines. The series premiered on ITV in 2010 and was produced by Carnival Films with support from Masterpiece in the United States. Its setting moves through major changes from the early 1910s into the 1920s.

Fellowes was already known as a screenwriter and actor before Downton Abbey. He won an Academy Award for writing Gosford Park, another story involving an English country house and its complicated social hierarchy. That earlier work is often mentioned alongside Downton Abbey, but the two are separate productions. Fellowes later created The Gilded Age, set among wealthy families in 19th-century New York.
