Who is the Chinese god of wealth?

The story behind the answer

The Chinese god of wealth is Caishen.

Caishen is a major deity in Chinese folk religion and Taoism, associated with prosperity, fortune, and successful trade. His name is especially prominent during Chinese New Year, when families and businesses welcome him and make offerings intended to attract financial good fortune.

Caishen is not always portrayed as one single historical or mythical person. Traditions identify several figures with him, including Zhao Gongming, Bi Gan, Fan Li, and the early-Tang official Li Guizu. Images may show him in court robes as a civil wealth deity or armor as a military wealth deity. Zhao Gongming is often shown riding a black tiger and carrying a golden rod.

A common mix-up is Guan Yu, who is also worshipped as a wealth deity in some commercial settings, and Tudigong, the local Earth God who may likewise be connected with prosperity. They are related figures, but Caishen is the standard canonical answer to the question.
