Who is the author of the 'His Dark Materials' trilogy?

The story behind the answer

Philip Pullman is the author of the His Dark Materials trilogy. The three fantasy novels are Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass, published between 1995 and 2000.

The story follows Lyra Belacqua and, later, Will Parry as they travel across parallel worlds. Pullman’s imagined universes include dæmons, animal companions that embody a person’s inner self, as well as witches, armoured polar bears, and a mysterious substance called Dust.

The trilogy’s title comes from John Milton’s epic poem Paradise Lost, and the books engage with ideas from theology, philosophy, and physics. A frequent source of confusion is the first book’s title: it is called Northern Lights in the United Kingdom and The Golden Compass in North America. Pullman later expanded the setting with The Book of Dust trilogy.
