Who is the author of 'Pride and Prejudice'?
Answer
Jane Austen
Answer
Jane Austen
The author of *Pride and Prejudice* is Jane Austen.
Austen wrote the novel in the early 19th century, when she was about 20 or 21. It was originally drafted under the working title *First Impressions*, then revised before publication by Thomas Egerton on 28 January 1813. The story follows Elizabeth Bennet as she confronts the dangers of judging people too quickly and of confusing social reputation with genuine character.
A common mix-up is confusing Austen with Mary Shelley, Emily Brontë, or Charlotte Brontë. Those writers were important contemporaries or near-contemporaries, but they wrote different works: Shelley wrote *Frankenstein*, Emily Brontë wrote *Wuthering Heights*, and Charlotte Brontë wrote *Jane Eyre*. Austen also wrote *Sense and Sensibility*, *Mansfield Park*, *Emma*, *Northanger Abbey*, and *Persuasion*.
The novel is often called a romance, but it is also a sharp comedy of manners. Its criticism of inheritance, marriage prospects, class, and gender expectations is a major reason it remains widely read.
