Who is Temujin better known as?

Temujin is better known as Genghis Khan, the founder and first great khan of the Mongol Empire.

Born around 1162, Temujin spent decades uniting the nomadic tribes of the Mongolian steppe. In 1206, a major assembly of Mongol leaders proclaimed him Genghis Khan, a title whose exact original meaning remains debated. His birth name continued to be used in historical records, but the title became the name by which he was known internationally.

Genghis Khan led campaigns across northern China, Central Asia and parts of the Middle East, creating the foundation of the largest contiguous land empire in history. His conquests were extraordinarily violent, yet his rule also connected distant regions through trade, communication and protected travel routes.

A common mix-up is treating Temujin and Genghis Khan as two different people. They are the same person: Temujin was his birth name, while Genghis Khan was the title he adopted after unifying the Mongol tribes. Spellings such as Chinggis Khan and Chingis Khan are also used.
