Who is often called the 'father of the internet'?

The story behind the answer

Vint Cerf is often called the “father of the Internet.” He earned that description for co-designing the TCP/IP protocols with Robert Kahn, the standards that allow separate computer networks to communicate as one interconnected Internet.

Cerf and Kahn developed the core ideas during the 1970s with support from DARPA. Their 1974 paper, “A Protocol for Packet Network Intercommunication,” described how different kinds of networks could exchange data through a common protocol. TCP/IP became the foundation of the modern Internet, and the ARPANET adopted it on January 1, 1983.

The title is not exclusive. Robert Kahn is also frequently called a father of the Internet, and Cerf himself has emphasized that the achievement was shared with many researchers. Still, Vint Cerf is the most common singular answer in general-knowledge quizzes.

Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web, not the Internet itself. Al Gore promoted Internet development but did not invent it.
