De la Fuente took charge of the senior side in December 2022, following Luis Enrique’s departure after Spain’s elimination from the 2022 World Cup. Before that promotion, he had worked extensively within Spain’s youth setup, coaching the under-19, under-21 and under-23 teams.

His international coaching record quickly gained major significance. De la Fuente guided Spain to victory in the 2023 UEFA Nations League and then led the team to the 2024 UEFA European Championship title. Spain defeated England 2–1 in the final in Berlin, earning its fourth European Championship.
