Who is listed as director of Street Fighter II: The World Warrior?

The story behind the answer

The director listed for Street Fighter II: The World Warrior is Akira Nishitani.

Nishitani directed Capcom’s 1991 arcade sequel, which substantially expanded the original game’s concept. He worked alongside designer Akira Yasuda, while Yoshiki Okamoto was credited as producer. The game’s development team refined the first title’s one-on-one combat into a character-driven system built around distinct moves, strengths, stages, and animations.

A frequent mix-up comes from the credits of the original Street Fighter. Takashi Nishiyama directed that 1987 game, and Hiroshi Matsumoto worked on its design. Yoshinori Ono is strongly associated with later Street Fighter history, especially the Street Fighter IV and V eras, but he is not the listed director of The World Warrior. Takashi Nishiyama is also a different person from Akira Nishitani.

Street Fighter II launched in arcades in March 1991 and became a landmark for competitive fighting games. Its success led to multiple revisions, including Champion Edition, Hyper Fighting, Super Street Fighter II, and Super Street Fighter II Turbo.
