Who is Frodo Baggins’s loyal companion in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings?

The story behind the answer

Frodo Baggins’s loyal companion in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings is Samwise Gamgee. Sam begins the story as Frodo’s gardener and accompanies him from the Shire toward Rivendell.

Sam becomes Frodo’s principal companion during the journey to Mordor. His loyalty remains strong through danger, exhaustion, the influence of the Ring, and Gollum’s attempts to divide the travelers. At several points, Sam’s practical courage directly helps the quest continue.

Near Mount Doom, Sam carries Frodo after Frodo can no longer walk. This moment expresses the friendship at the center of the story, although Sam does not literally carry the Ring to its destruction. After the War of the Ring, Sam returns to the Shire and eventually becomes its mayor.

Merry and Pippin are also close friends of Frodo, but they are not his principal travelling companion throughout the journey. Aragorn is a human king and ranger, not a hobbit companion.
