Who is credited with inventing the World Wide Web?

The story behind the answer

Who is credited with inventing the World Wide Web? Tim Berners-Lee is the credited inventor.

While working at CERN in 1989, Berners-Lee proposed a system for linking and sharing information across different computers. He developed the core technologies that made the Web practical: HTML for structuring pages, HTTP for transferring them, and URLs for identifying resources.

Berners-Lee also created the first web browser and web server. The first website, hosted at CERN, went online in 1990 and explained the project itself. The technology spread beyond CERN in 1991, and CERN released the Web to the public domain in 1993.

A common mix-up is confusing the Web with the Internet. The Internet is the underlying global network; the Web is a service built on it. Marc Andreessen later helped popularize browsing through Mosaic, while Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn were central figures in developing the Internet’s TCP/IP foundations.
