Who is credited with creating the original My Little Pony toy concept?

Bonnie Zacherle is credited with creating the original My Little Pony toy concept.

Zacherle was an illustrator and designer who joined Hasbro’s research-and-development team in 1980. Drawing on her childhood wish to own a horse, she proposed a small pony with a brushable mane and tail—features that could give children a toy version of the horse experience she had wanted herself.

The first result was My Pretty Pony, a larger, ten-inch figure introduced in 1981. After that design, Hasbro launched the smaller and more colorful My Little Pony figures in 1982, establishing the toy line that became a much broader entertainment franchise.

Zacherle’s role is sometimes simplified in quiz questions. She is the person most commonly credited as the creator, but the original design work was collaborative: sculptor Charles Muenchinger and Hasbro manager Steve D’Aguanno also helped develop and submit the toy design. A design-patent application was filed in August 1981, and the patent was later granted in 1983.
