In one 1964 origin story, Teressa Bellissimo is credited with preparing the first Buffalo wings.

Bellissimo was the co-owner of Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York, with her husband, Frank. The familiar account says that on March 4, 1964, their son Dominic was tending bar when friends arrived unexpectedly. Teressa prepared chicken wings by deep-frying them and tossing them in a spicy sauce, creating the dish later known as Buffalo wings.

The story has several versions. In one, Dominic wanted a quick snack for friends; in another, he wanted food to serve customers late on a Friday night. A separate account says an accidental delivery of wings prompted Frank to ask Teressa to use them. These differences concern the circumstances, not the identity most associated with the Anchor Bar claim.

The credit is not universally accepted as the sole origin of Buffalo wings. John Young also served chicken wings in Buffalo beginning in 1961, using a different preparation and sauce. The wording “one 1964 origin story” appropriately reflects that historical dispute.
