Who is credited as the designer of Pikachu?

The story behind the answer

Atsuko Nishida is credited as the designer of Pikachu.

Pikachu was created for the original Pokémon games and became one of the franchise’s most recognizable characters. Nishida designed Pikachu, while Ken Sugimori finalized the artwork and helped establish how the Pokémon would appear in the games’ illustrations. Pikachu’s design combines a small rodent-like body, pointed ears, red cheek pouches, and a lightning-bolt-shaped tail.

Pikachu is an Electric-type Pokémon. In the original games, it could be found in Viridian Forest and later evolved into Raichu when exposed to a Thunder Stone. The anime gave Pikachu an even larger role by making it Ash Ketchum’s partner and allowing it to remain unevolved.

Pikachu’s name is a Japanese onomatopoeic combination associated with sparkling electricity and squeaking. Its popularity led to merchandise, spin-off games, films, and appearances beyond the main role-playing series. Nishida is sometimes mistakenly credited only with artwork, but she is specifically recognized for Pikachu’s design.
