Who is credited as the creator of Pikachu’s original design?

The story behind the answer

Atsuko Nishida is credited as the creator of Pikachu’s original design.

Nishida created Pikachu at the request of lead designer Ken Sugimori. The design was later finalized by Sugimori, which is why both names can appear in discussions of Pikachu’s artwork and development. Satoshi Tajiri created the Pokémon concept and founded Game Freak, but he is not credited as Pikachu’s individual designer.

Pikachu was conceived as a small, appealing Electric-type Pokémon. Its yellow color, red cheek pouches, and lightning-shaped tail helped distinguish it from the many other creatures in the first-generation games. The final character design translated especially well to animation and merchandise.

Pikachu’s worldwide fame grew after it became Ash Ketchum’s partner in the Pokémon anime. That role made Pikachu the franchise mascot, but mascot status and design credit are separate facts. Nishida’s contribution concerns the character’s visual creation, while Sugimori handled the finalized official artwork.
