Who invented the Reebok Pump technology?
Answer
Paul Litchfield
Answer
Paul Litchfield
Paul Litchfield invented the Reebok Pump technology. As part of Reebok’s Advanced Concepts team, he helped turn an inflatable fitting system into a commercially successful athletic shoe.
The idea built on earlier inflatable footwear work. Reebok acquired the tennis and ski brand Ellesse in 1988, gaining access to developmental technology that included an inflatable tongue for a ski boot. Reebok then worked with industrial designers and medical-device specialists to adapt the concept for basketball footwear.
The Pump used a small button on the tongue to inflate internal air chambers, creating a closer, adjustable fit around the foot and ankle. The first model was released on November 24, 1989. Its unusual construction made it expensive and technically challenging to manufacture.
Litchfield is commonly identified as the inventor, although the product emerged from collaborative development involving Reebok’s innovation group, designer Steven Smith, Design Continuum, and outside technical partners. That team history explains why some accounts describe Litchfield as the lead inventor or designer rather than the sole creator.
