Who invented Coca-Cola?

Who invented Coca-Cola? John Pemberton, an Atlanta pharmacist and chemist, developed the drink in 1886.

Pemberton created Coca-Cola while experimenting with coca leaves, kola nuts, and other ingredients. He was seeking a non-alcoholic alternative to his earlier beverage, Pemberton's French Wine Coca, after Atlanta and Fulton County adopted prohibition legislation. The first Coca-Cola sales took place at Jacobs' Pharmacy in Atlanta on May 8, 1886.

Pemberton's bookkeeper, Frank Mason Robinson, suggested the name Coca-Cola and wrote its distinctive Spencerian-script logo. The name referred to the original use of coca leaves and kola nuts. Robinson also helped promote the drink as a soda-fountain beverage and patent medicine.

A common mix-up is confusing the inventor with Asa Candler. Candler did not invent Coca-Cola; he acquired control of the formula and brand in the late 1880s and used aggressive marketing to build the business. The Coca-Cola Company itself was incorporated in 1892.
