Barbara Lee introduced the bill that became the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020.
Lee, a Democrat from California, introduced the bill in the House of Representatives on March 27, 2020. The legislation later became the framework for special circulating-coin designs, including the coins associated with the United States Semiquincentennial in 2026.
The act authorized redesigns for several denominations and called for five quarter designs. It also required one quarter to depict women’s contributions to independence, linking the coin program to the broader historical themes of America250.
Barbara Lee should not be confused with Rosie Rios, who later chaired the United States Semiquincentennial Commission. Dan DiLella was also associated with the commission as an earlier chair. The question concerns the coinage bill’s sponsor, not the leadership of the anniversary commission.
