Ninsun interpreted Gilgamesh’s dreams about the arrival of Enkidu. Gilgamesh brought the dreams to his mother, the wise goddess Ninsun, who recognized their prophetic meaning.
In the first dream, a heavenly object fell before Gilgamesh, and Ninsun interpreted it as the arrival of a powerful equal or brother. In the second, an axe appeared in Uruk; she likewise identified it as a coming companion whom Gilgamesh would love and welcome.
This detail is easy to mix up with a later section of the epic. During the expedition to the Cedar Forest, Gilgamesh experiences several frightening dreams, but Enkidu interprets those as favorable omens. Ninsun’s role belongs specifically to the opening dreams that anticipate Enkidu’s arrival and friendship with Gilgamesh.
