Who holds the NHL record for the most career points?

The story behind the answer

Who holds the NHL record for the most career points? Wayne Gretzky does, with 2,857 regular-season points.

Gretzky built that total through 894 goals and 1,963 assists during an NHL career that lasted from 1979 to 1999. His 1,963 assists alone are also an NHL career record, and his 2,857 points remain far ahead of the next-highest totals.

Gretzky played for the Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues, and New York Rangers. He won four Stanley Cups with Edmonton and earned the nickname “The Great One” because of his extraordinary scoring and playmaking.

A common mix-up is confusing regular-season points with points including the playoffs. Gretzky also holds that combined record, with 3,239 career points, as well as the playoff career record with 382.
