Who has won the most Wimbledon women's singles titles?

The story behind the answer

Martina Navratilova has won the most Wimbledon women’s singles titles, with nine championships. She captured the titles in 1978, 1979, 1982 through 1987, and 1990.

Navratilova’s Wimbledon dominance was concentrated in the 1980s. Her six consecutive titles from 1982 to 1987 remain the Open Era record, and she reached the singles final 12 times. Her last Wimbledon triumph came in 1990, when she defeated Zina Garrison 6–4, 6–1 in the final.

The record can be misunderstood because Wimbledon’s history includes both the amateur era and the Open Era, which began in 1968 when professionals were admitted. Helen Wills Moody won eight titles in the earlier era, while Dorothea Lambert Chambers won seven. Navratilova’s nine are the overall record for women’s singles, not merely the Open Era mark. She also won numerous Wimbledon doubles and mixed-doubles titles, making her one of the tournament’s most successful competitors in any category.
