Who has voiced Pikachu in the Pokémon anime for most of its history?

The story behind the answer

Ikue Ōtani has voiced Pikachu in the Pokémon anime for most of its history.

Ōtani is a Japanese voice actor whose performance has remained a constant across the franchise’s many anime series. Unlike most characters, Pikachu keeps the same characteristic vocal identity in different language versions, using its name and familiar cries rather than receiving a completely different localized voice.

She also voiced Pikachu in many games and other Pokémon productions. This consistency helped make Pikachu’s voice recognizable worldwide, even when the surrounding dialogue was dubbed into another language.

Pikachu’s anime role began with the first episode in 1997. The character became the franchise mascot partly because Pikachu appealed to a broad audience and worked well as Ash Ketchum’s companion. Although other performers have voiced Pikachu in particular adaptations or special circumstances, Ōtani is the performer most closely associated with the character.
