Who had the first pick in the 2018 NFL Draft?

The story behind the answer

The Cleveland Browns had the first pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. They used the No. 1 overall selection on quarterback Baker Mayfield of Oklahoma on April 26, 2018.

Cleveland entered the draft holding the top pick after finishing the 2017 season with an 0–16 record, one of the worst seasons in NFL history. The Browns also owned the fourth overall pick, acquired earlier in a trade with the Houston Texans, giving them unusual influence over the top of the draft.

Mayfield became Cleveland’s first No. 1 overall selection since Tim Couch in 1999. The Browns later used the fourth pick on Ohio State cornerback Denzel Ward. A common mix-up is to name Mayfield as the answer: he was the player selected first, while Cleveland was the team holding the first pick. The New York Giants selected running back Saquon Barkley at No. 2, followed by the New York Jets taking quarterback Sam Darnold at No. 3.
