Who gave the 1908 lecture titled Space and Time?

Hermann Minkowski gave the 1908 lecture titled “Space and Time.”

Minkowski presented “Raum und Zeit” on 21 September 1908 to the German Society of Scientists and Physicians in Cologne. The lecture offered a powerful geometric interpretation of relativity: space and time should be treated together as a four-dimensional spacetime rather than as completely separate, absolute arenas.

Minkowski had been Einstein’s mathematics professor in Zurich and developed his formulation after studying the work of Einstein, Lorentz, and Poincaré. His approach introduced the idea that physical events are points in spacetime and that observers using different inertial frames are related by Lorentz transformations. The geometry made the invariant spacetime interval central.

A frequent misconception is that Minkowski discovered special relativity before Einstein. Einstein published his physical theory in 1905; Minkowski later reorganized it into a mathematical and geometric framework. Minkowski had already discussed relativity in a 1907 lecture, “The Relativity Principle,” before delivering the better-known 1908 talk.
