Who founded Vogue magazine in New York City in 1892?

The story behind the answer

Arthur Baldwin Turnure founded Vogue magazine in New York City in 1892.

Turnure was an American businessman who established Vogue as a weekly society publication. Its early audience was New York’s affluent social class, and its pages covered local society events, etiquette, fashion, and culture. The publication began before the modern fashion-magazine industry had taken shape.

Vogue’s original format was very different from the globally recognized fashion magazine it later became. The title was published by the Vogue Company, and its commercial direction changed substantially after Condé Nast acquired it in 1909. Nast expanded the magazine’s fashion coverage and helped develop its luxury advertising model.

A common mix-up is naming Condé Nast as Vogue’s founder. He was the publisher who transformed the magazine after buying it, while Turnure created the original publication. Vogue therefore traces its founding to Turnure’s 1892 launch, not to Nast’s later ownership.
