Who founded Carvel, the American ice-cream chain known for soft serve?

The story behind the answer

Tom Carvel founded Carvel, the American ice-cream chain known for soft serve. In 1934, Carvel’s ice-cream truck suffered a flat tire in Hartsdale, New York, and he sold melting ice cream to customers from the truck rather than abandoning it.

The incident convinced Carvel that a softer frozen product could be sold successfully. He developed equipment and methods for making soft serve, then opened a permanent store and built a franchise business around the concept.

Carvel became especially recognizable for soft-serve cakes and molded ice-cream products, including the company’s cartoon-like Fudgie the Whale and Cookie Puss designs. Its advertising also helped popularize the distinctive voice of Tom Carvel.

Carvel’s history is sometimes confused with the separate development of soft serve by other inventors and companies. Carvel’s particular contribution was building a prominent American retail and franchise brand around soft-serve ice cream.
