Woods won his second green jacket with a four-round total of 272, or 16 under par. Duval closed with a brilliant 67, the best final-round score among the leading contenders, but finished at 274, two strokes behind. Phil Mickelson placed third at 275.

The tournament carried unusual historical significance because Woods was attempting to win all four major championships consecutively. His victory completed the sequence later nicknamed the “Tiger Slam,” following major wins at the 2000 U.S. Open, 2000 Open Championship and 2000 PGA Championship.

Duval briefly tied Woods for the lead during the final round after birdieing the par-five 15th hole. He gave the stroke back at the par-three 16th, however, and Woods pulled away. Ernie Els, Vijay Singh and Phil Mickelson were prominent players in the field, but only Duval finished as Woods’s runner-up.
