Who finalized the design of Pikachu for the Pokémon franchise?

The story behind the answer

Ken Sugimori finalized the design of Pikachu for the Pokémon franchise.

Atsuko Nishida developed the original Pikachu design during the creation of Pokémon Red and Blue, while Sugimori, Game Freak’s lead artist, finalized the appearance used for promotional artwork and the finished character presentation. Koji Nishino also influenced the design process by encouraging a cuter look.

Pikachu was created as an Electric-type Pokémon with a yellow body, red cheek sacs, and a lightning-bolt-shaped tail. Nishida has explained that early ideas drew on squirrels, while Satoshi Tajiri described the creature as a mouse Pokémon. This is why different accounts may mention several contributors without contradicting one another.

Pikachu was not originally guaranteed to become the franchise mascot. Clefairy was also considered for a prominent role, but Pikachu’s appeal to a broad audience helped make it the anime’s central companion. Its association with Ash then made Pikachu one of the most recognizable characters in global pop culture.
