Who directed the Stephen King film adaptation The Shawshank Redemption?

The story behind the answer

Frank Darabont directed The Shawshank Redemption.

Released in 1994, the film is adapted from Stephen King's novella Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption, published in the 1982 collection Different Seasons. Darabont wrote the screenplay as well as directing the movie, which follows banker Andy Dufresne after he is imprisoned at Shawshank State Penitentiary.

Tim Robbins plays Andy, while Morgan Freeman plays Ellis Boyd “Red” Redding, the narrator and Andy's friend. The film examines imprisonment, friendship, hope, and institutionalization over several decades.

The title is frequently shortened in conversation, but The Shawshank Redemption is not based on a full-length King novel. It is one of the four novellas in Different Seasons, a collection that also includes The Body, Apt Pupil, and The Breathing Method.
