Who directed the Seinfeld series finale?

The story behind the answer

Andy Ackerman directed the Seinfeld series finale, “The Finale.”

Ackerman had become the sitcom’s principal director beginning with season 6, replacing Tom Cherones, who directed most episodes in the earlier seasons. Ackerman remained associated with the series through seasons 6–9, making him the natural choice for its concluding episode.

“The Finale” was written by co-creator Larry David, who returned to the show after leaving the regular writing team following season 7. The story brings Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer to trial after they fail to help a mugging victim in a fictional Massachusetts town. Numerous former characters return to testify against them.

A common mix-up is confusing the finale’s director with Art Wolff, who directed the 1989 pilot, or Tom Cherones, the director most associated with seasons 1–5. Ackerman’s finale originally aired on NBC on May 14, 1998, as a 75-minute broadcast and was later edited into two syndicated episodes.
