Who directed the original Street Fighter arcade game?

The story behind the answer

Takashi Nishiyama directed the original Street Fighter arcade game, released by Capcom in 1987.

Nishiyama had previously worked at Irem, where he designed or helped develop games including Moon Patrol and Kung-Fu Master. His interest in building a game around one-on-one boss battles helped lead to Street Fighter's concept. He worked with planner Hiroshi Matsumoto, who is also closely associated with the game's development, which can cause confusion over who held which role.

Nishiyama is credited as producer and director, sometimes under the nickname “Piston” Takashi Nishiyama. Matsumoto was credited as planner and later collaborated with Nishiyama on other fighting-game projects. After leaving Capcom, the pair joined SNK and contributed to influential games such as Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting.

The original Street Fighter established ideas that became central to the series, including command-based special moves and an international roster. Its successors, especially Street Fighter II, became much more famous, but Nishiyama's 1987 game laid the foundation for Capcom's fighting-game legacy.
