The 2018 music documentary follows Coldplay from its early student-bedroom rehearsals through the band's rise to international fame and the A Head Full of Dreams Tour. Whitecross had unusually deep access: he had been filming the group for about 20 years, making the documentary a long-range portrait rather than a retrospective assembled entirely from interviews.
The film combines archival footage, unseen material and concert performances. It was released in selected cinemas worldwide on 14 November 2018, then became available to stream two days later. Whitecross's earlier music work included directing the Oasis documentary Supersonic, a project that helped lead to the Coldplay film.
A common mix-up is confusing the director with the documentary's producers, cinematographer or the band members featured onscreen. Mat Whitecross is the credited director; Chris Martin, Jonny Buckland, Guy Berryman and Will Champion appear as subjects, not directors.
