Who directed the 2025 film Avatar: Fire and Ash?

The story behind the answer

James Cameron directed the 2025 film Avatar: Fire and Ash. He also co-wrote the screenplay and served as one of the film’s producers, continuing his central creative role in the Avatar franchise.

Cameron directed the original Avatar, released in 2009, and returned for Avatar: The Way of Water in 2022. His work on the sequels involved extensive planning because the films were developed as a connected story and required demanding visual-effects and performance-capture techniques, including underwater production for The Way of Water.

Fire and Ash was filmed in part alongside The Way of Water. Cameron’s long collaboration with producer Jon Landau helped shape the franchise, but Landau was not the director. Denis Villeneuve and Peter Jackson are also major filmmakers associated with science-fiction and fantasy cinema, yet neither directed this Avatar installment. Cameron is additionally known for directing Titanic, Aliens, and Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
