Minions is a prequel and spin-off of Despicable Me that follows Kevin, Stuart, and Bob as they search for a new villain to serve. Balda and Coffin shared directing duties, while Brian Lynch wrote the screenplay and Chris Meledandri served as a producer.

Pierre Coffin was already closely associated with the franchise: he co-directed the first Despicable Me and provided the voices of the Minions. Kyle Balda later became a major creative figure in the series, also directing Minions: The Rise of Gru with Brad Ableson and Jonathan del Val.
