Who directed the 2008 Turkish film Pandora’s Box, which won the Golden Shell at San Sebastián?

The story behind the answer

Yeşim Ustaoğlu directed the 2008 Turkish film Pandora’s Box, which won the Golden Shell at San Sebastián.

The film follows three adult siblings who travel to find their missing elderly mother in the Black Sea region. Their journey exposes old family tensions and forces them to confront responsibilities they have avoided. Tsilla Chelton plays the mother, Nusret.

Ustaoğlu’s film uses the family story to explore aging, memory, urban life, and the distance between generations. Its title evokes the buried problems that emerge when the siblings return to their family history, rather than presenting a literal retelling of the Greek myth.

Pandora’s Box premiered in the 2008 festival circuit and received the Golden Shell for best film at the San Sebastián International Film Festival. It is separate from the 1929 German silent film and from the 1951 British-American fantasy romance.
