Who directed the 2008 Turkish drama film Pandora’s Box?

The story behind the answer

Yeşim Ustaoğlu directed the 2008 Turkish drama film Pandora’s Box.

The film follows three siblings who travel to find their elderly mother after she disappears from her rural home. Their journey exposes unresolved tensions and different ideas about family, independence, and responsibility.

Pandora’s Box premiered at the San Sebastián International Film Festival, where it won the Golden Shell for best film in 2008. The title refers to the way the family’s journey opens long-hidden emotional problems, echoing the wider Pandora myth.

Ustaoğlu is a major figure in Turkish cinema. She is also known for films including The Trace, Journey to the Sun, and Araf: Somewhere in Between. This film should not be confused with the 1929 German silent film of the same name.
