Who directed the 1997 American film Soul Food?

The story behind the answer

George Tillman Jr. directed the 1997 American film Soul Food.

The film was Tillman’s feature-directing debut and was released by Fox Searchlight Pictures. It follows the extended Joseph family, whose weekly Sunday dinner is disrupted when family tensions and a serious illness challenge their traditions.

Soul Food was inspired partly by Tillman’s own family experiences in Chicago. Its title refers both to the meals prepared by the family matriarch, Big Mama, and to the emotional nourishment created by shared food and family rituals.

The film is often confused with the television series Soul Food: The Series, which premiered in 2000. The movie came first, and Tillman later became known for directing films including Men of Honor and Notorious.
