Who directed the 1960 psychological horror film Peeping Tom?
Answer
Michael Powell
Answer
Michael Powell
Michael Powell directed the 1960 psychological horror film Peeping Tom.
The film follows Mark Lewis, a focus puller and aspiring filmmaker who records women as he murders them. His camera and tripod become instruments of both filmmaking and violence, making the movie an unsettling study of voyeurism, spectatorship, and the relationship between cinema and fear.
Karlheinz Böhm played Mark, while Anna Massey played Helen Stephens. Leo Marks wrote the screenplay. Peeping Tom was released in the same year as Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, but its critical reception was initially far harsher; the controversy damaged Powell’s career in Britain for many years. Later critics reassessed the film as an important work of British psychological horror and a striking examination of the gaze.
