Who directed the 1951 British-American film Pandora and starred Ava Gardner as Pandora Reynolds?

The story behind the answer

Albert Lewin directed the 1951 British-American film Pandora and the Flying Dutchman, in which Ava Gardner played Pandora Reynolds. Lewin also wrote the screenplay and produced the film.

The story combines modern romance with the legend of the Flying Dutchman. Pandora, living on the Spanish coast, becomes involved with Hendrik van der Zee, a mysterious man whose identity connects him to the supernatural sea legend.

James Mason played the Flying Dutchman opposite Gardner. The film was shot in and around the Costa Brava, giving its romantic fantasy plot a distinctive Mediterranean setting.

Despite sharing the name Pandora with the Greek myth and the 1929 German film, this movie is not a direct adaptation of either. Its title refers mainly to the heroine and the mythic associations surrounding her story.
