James Cameron directed the 2009 science-fiction film Avatar, set partly on the moon Pandora.
Cameron wrote, directed, co-produced, and co-edited Avatar. The film was developed over many years because its planned digital characters and environments required visual-effects technology that Cameron felt was not yet ready when he first conceived the project.
Avatar follows former Marine Jake Sully, who operates a remotely controlled Na’vi-human hybrid body on Pandora. The story combines science fiction, ecological themes, military conflict, and a romance involving Neytiri. Its setting and visual effects made Pandora central to the film’s identity rather than merely a backdrop.
Cameron had previously directed major films including The Terminator, Aliens, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and Titanic. Avatar became a major international success and was followed by Avatar: The Way of Water, released in 2022. The director’s name is sometimes confused with the film’s fictional characters, but Cameron is the real-world filmmaker.
