Who directed Avatar, the 2009 film set partly on the moon Pandora?

The story behind the answer

James Cameron directed Avatar, the 2009 film set partly on the moon Pandora.

Avatar follows former Marine Jake Sully, who travels to Pandora through the Avatar Program and becomes involved in the conflict between human mining interests and the Na’vi. Cameron wrote, directed, co-produced, and co-edited the film, which combined live action with extensive computer-generated imagery.

Pandora in Avatar is a fictional moon orbiting the gas giant Polyphemus. It is not the same object as Saturn’s real moon Pandora, although both names ultimately refer to the figure from Greek mythology.

The film became a major commercial success and won three Academy Awards, including awards for cinematography, visual effects, and art direction. Its world-building helped make Pandora one of the best-known fictional extraterrestrial settings in modern cinema.
