Who directed Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 horror film The Birds?

The story behind the answer

Alfred Hitchcock directed the 1963 horror film The Birds.

The film is loosely based on Daphne du Maurier’s 1952 short story “The Birds,” although Hitchcock’s version relocates much of the story to Bodega Bay, California. The plot follows socialite Melanie Daniels as increasingly aggressive birds attack the coastal community.

The Birds was produced during Hitchcock’s most influential period, following films such as Vertigo and Psycho. Unlike a conventional monster movie, it never gives a definitive explanation for the attacks, which helped make the birds’ behavior feel especially unsettling.

The film is sometimes described as a natural-horror or ecological-horror story rather than a supernatural one. It is also notable for using extensive visual effects and trained birds, with production combining live animals, animation, optical effects, and compositing.
