Pitching for the Oakland Athletics, Manaea no-hit Boston in a 3–0 victory at Oakland Coliseum on April 21, 2018. He allowed no hits over nine innings and struck out 10 batters, producing the first no-hitter of the 2018 Major League Baseball season.

The achievement was especially notable because the Red Sox entered the game with a 17–2 record and one of baseball’s most productive offenses. Manaea completed the game with a dominant performance against a lineup that had been leading the league in several major offensive categories. The Athletics supplied all three runs in the victory.

This was the 12th no-hitter in Athletics franchise history and the club’s first since Dallas Braden’s perfect game in 2010. It also ended Boston’s long wait after the previous no-hitter against the Red Sox, thrown by Seattle’s Chris Bosio in 1993. “Red Sox” is therefore the canonical team answer, although “Boston Red Sox” is the fuller form.
