Who did Arsenal play in their 2026–27 Premier League opening match?
Answer
Coventry City
Answer
Coventry City
Arsenal played Coventry City in their 2026–27 Premier League opening match.
The fixture took place at the Emirates Stadium on Friday 21 August 2026. Arsenal, the defending champions, opened the season against Coventry City, one of three clubs promoted from the Championship for the new campaign.
Arsenal won 3–0. The result gave the champions three points and a positive start to their title defence, while Coventry began their return to the Premier League with a defeat. The match was also the first competitive league game of the entire 2026–27 Premier League season.
Coventry’s promotion was a major part of the season’s background. The club returned to the Premier League after an absence of 25 years, the longest gap among the promoted clubs and the longest such absence for a former Premier League club at that point. Hull City and Ipswich Town were the other promoted teams, but neither played Arsenal during the opening round.
